Richard N. Slater has over 35 years of litigation and general practice experience and has handled all types of accident cases from the investigation stage up through trial and verdict. These types of cases include significant construction accidents, motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall accidents, medical malpractice litigation and wrongful death matters. He has been associated with law firms throughout New York City representing both plaintiffs and defendants over his career. He is now in private practice with offices in New York, New York and Boca Raton, Florida.
He has also served as an arbitrator/mediator for the American Arbitration Association, was named New York’s Lawyer of Distinction in 1999, and has won documented multi-million dollar verdicts in courts throught the City of New York. He has tried cases to verdict against highly regarded and respected attorneys in the New York Metropolitian Area, including Benedict Morelli, Esq. (representating the Plaintiff) and Alan Kaminsky, Esq. (for the Defense).
He has lectured at the Cardozo Law School on the subject of jury selection and civil trial practice, and served as New York Counsel for the Mount Vernon Fire Insurance Company, U.S. Liability Insurance Company and U.S. Underwriters Insurance Company. He has also litigated cases to verdict as defense counsel representing the interests of insureds of the Public Service Mutual Insurance Company, Investors Insurance Company of America and the Hertz Corporation. It is this previous experience as an attorney representing the interests of the defense that has given him a keen insight into the way defense counsel thinks and proceeds at trial.
Mr. Slater is one of the leading experts in the field of legal rights for undocumented immigrants as they relate to civil lawsuits in New York State. Currently, he is the only trial counsel in New York State who possesses two reported Appellate cases on this subject having received favorable post trial/motion results (with able assistance of Appellate counsel Brian Isaacs, Esq) on the cases of Coque and Balbuena/Majlinger (see Verdicts and Settlements Page).
